Vehicle Profile: The 2011 Toyota Camry

The 2011 Camry has a comfortable view from the top.

There’s no great secret to the Toyota Camry’s perennial success; it’s a stylish, flexible sedan with a comfortable ride and enjoyable performance. After years of dominating the market using a few simple principles, the Camry still manages to do it better than the competition, year after year after year.

The Camry arrives for 2011 sporting Camry, LE, SE and top-end XLE trim levels, and an advanced Hybrid model. Starting at just $19,820, Toyota’s four-door blends modern athleticism with upscale sedan refinement. Projector-beam headlamps, energy-absorbing glass and LED taillights come standard, and higher trims offer available 17-inch machine-finished alloys, heated side mirrors, a power moonroof and sleek rear spoiler. Hybrids get a special acoustic noise-reducing windshield, as well as blue-accented headlamps with the option of integrated foglamps.

Entry Camry and LE trims roll off assembly under the power of a 2.5-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine that makes 169 hp and 167 lb/ft of torque through a standard six-speed manual or an available six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. SE trims get the boosted 179-hp iteration of Toyota’s four, as well as the option of an energetic 3.5-liter V6 that makes 268 hp and 248 lb/ft of torque (also available on the LE and XLE).

Each engine uses variable valve timing and advanced tuning for maximum efficiency and ultra-low emissions, and the innovative Camry Hybrid boosts mileage estimates to up to 35 mpg. Starting with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and adding a punchy electric motor, Toyota’s hybrid delivers a combined 187 hp. Across the lineup, smooth, responsive steering stems from a MacPherson front and rear suspension with gas-filled shock absorbers and a stabilizer bar. The SE offers some enthusiastic sport tuning, and the Hybrid adds electric power steering.

The newest Camry delivers a cabin as stylish and inviting as its exterior. Non-hybrid models get standard cloth or available heated leather seats; the Hybrid sees an optional coating of leather and some wood-grain trim (with optional chrome) for good measure. SEs get athletic aluminum trim, sporty fabric seats and a set of sleek sport pedals. In all models, rear seats fold down (and recline, in the case of the XLE), opening up additional cargo space.

A clean and modern dash houses everything from the available push-button ignition of the Smart Key system (standard in the Hybrid) to the available dual-zone climate control. A six-speaker, XM Satellite Radio-ready sound system comes standard, and upper trims upgrade to an eight-speaker premium JBL sound system with Bluetooth®, XM, USB and iPod connectivity. A voice-activated DVD navigation system with a JBL® four-CD sound system, real-time traffic and Bluetooth is also offered.

Toyota’s commitment to safety starts with its exclusive Star Safety System, an amalgam of Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TC) and antilock brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA). All trims offer standard structural enhancements like an energy-absorbing, collapsible steering column, side-impact door beams and innovative crumple zones in the front and rear, as well as standard daytime running lights, a tire-pressure monitor and front, side, side-curtain and driver’s knee airbags.

The formula for the 2011 Camry’s success is simple. Replicating it, however, seems to be anything but.
